PCE defends the withdrawal of Spanish troops from Eastern Europe and is committed to peace
Jan. 21, 2022

Having raised the alarms about Russia's "imminent invasion" of Ukraine, an intoxication repeated by all the complacent Western media, the hawks in the Pentagon and NATO have decided to increase their military deployment on Russia's own doorstep. Ukraine is just the excuse to further expand the radius of action of the US war machine.

If Trump's dismal tenure has increased international tension, Biden seems to be doing himself credit in the race to upset fragile international balances. The US president, aware of the intoxication created by his own secret services about the "imminent invasion" of Ukraine, has not hesitated to add to the lie by betting on destabilisation in Europe. In this journey into the abyss of war, NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg has even alarmed the French and German governments with his warmongering statements.

NATO does not defend peace: it is merely an instrument of the United States to maintain its domination of Europe and a large part of the planet, to ensure the subordination of the European Union and to burden its allies with part of its irresponsible imperial war adventures.

Since the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact and the 1997 agreements with Moscow, NATO, in breach of its commitments, has forced five waves of enlargement to incorporate fourteen new countries: expansion to Russia's borders means installing tactical armaments on Russia's doorstep, which does not exactly contribute to stability and peace in Europe and on the planet.

The US threatens a 'severe response' if Russia 'crosses the Ukrainian border', but it is the US that has crossed those borders to help a regime that emerged from a coup in 2014, is in breach of the Minsk Agreements and is playing with the fire provided by the Pentagon. The US and NATO, which have violated international law in many theatres of war, are stirring up a conflict in the heart of Europe, far from America, while pretending to defend peace.

Now, the US is imposing economic sanctions, threatening to expel Russian financial institutions from the international payment platform SWIFT and blocking the operation of the already built Nord Stream 2 pipeline. It has militarised Eastern Europe by conducting frequent military exercises in the region, patrols Russia's air and sea borders with its warplanes and ships harassing Russia, has taken its military apparatus to the Baltic Sea and the Black Sea, it has stationed troops in Ukraine (which does not even belong to NATO), it has moved "special operations" teams and sent weapons to Ukraine, it has deployed its missile shield in Poland and Romania, a shield that can become an instrument of attack and whose missiles could eventually reach the Russian capital within minutes.

It is the United States and NATO that bring their troops and weapons to Russia's borders, not Russia that deploys its military apparatus in the vicinity of the United States. It should come as no surprise that Russia is concerned about its security.

Europe's interests are not those of the United States. In addition to the economic cost, the political consequences and the problems associated with the disruption of energy supplies, Europe risks becoming a battlefield once again, because the United States always plays war far from its borders. The outbreak of a new war on the European continent would be a catastrophe and would bring the world to the brink of an abyss because of the involvement of the major nuclear powers. The European Union cannot accompany the United States in this dangerous scenario, but must implement immediate measures to de-escalate the conflict.

Spain must play an active role by putting forward proposals that favour de-escalation, and to this end the PSOE must understand the need for Spain to maintain an independent position in defence of a negotiated solution to the conflict on the basis of not modifying the current situation in the region and to negotiate an agreement that provides both Russia and Ukraine with mutual security on their borders. To this end, we advocate the withdrawal of Spanish troops from Eastern Europe, and support diplomatic and peaceful means of resolving disputes.

NATO's position in this conflict reaffirms the PCE's view that NATO is a danger to peace, which is why we will continue to work to get our country out of the Atlantic Alliance and to dismantle the US bases in Rota and Morón de la Frontera.
